Greater is He who is in us... (Friday)

The best way I could describe this entire week, would be to say that it's felt like everything around me was under a thick, dark cloud of Spiritual Attack. Tonight was no different! There was a minor bump in the road, just to get down to PB tonight, but we managed to pull it off regardless of the circumstances.

As the beautiful San Diego weather starts to settle in, it brings drawls more people to our meals. The crowd is growing like crazy and there are so many new faces. One of our new guests was acting a bit obnoxious while we were setting up. I did my best to lovingly explain to him how we do things down there. (It's always a task to get an unsober person to comprehend formalities.) It eventually worked itself out though and we started the night off in prayer before a message was given on Aninias & Sapphira, and lying to The Holy Spirit.

This Ministry is hard... I'm asking for more prayer support.
Where I am weak, He is strong!

I was given a helpful gift by one of our regulars, Reggie. I laughed inside when the gift was presented to me... not because it was funny nor was I being rude, but because awhile back I had joked around (to myself) about this very item. Reggie explained that he enjoys hearing the weekly messages, but finds it hard to hear what is being said most of the time. He went to the swap meet and bought me a Mega-Phone, so that everyone could hear me loud & clear from now on. (To be honest... I'm nervous about using it and drawing attention in the wrong manner.) I did not use my new toy tonight because I had to figure out how to turn it on first... which I've discovered my dogs absolutely do not like.

Our amigo, Vista was back on the boardwalk after spending nearly another week at the hospital due to his horrible drinking problems. While he was away, what little possessions he did have, were stolen, so again he stood empty handed with only the clothes on his back to his name. I've learned over the course of a year, that this is one vicious cycle most of the people go through on a regular basis. It crushes me! Vista is tip-toeing at 'deaths door' and I certainly do not want to see another man perish. Please join us in prayer for his salvation and deliverance from such wicked bondage.

The food went so fast again this week! I will start looking into other resources for donations and support from agencies. I trust that GOD will continue to provide, but it's also required that we don't just sit & wait for opportunities to fall in our laps. "Faith without works is dead."

Before we left, I met a guy from another Ministry, from another church, who was meeting with a group of Believers in the very spot we were leaving from. I shared with him what GOD has been doing in PB through our Ministry, and even introduced some of the guys to him.

In a sense, I felt as though GOD was putting in a relief pitcher for the evening. I look forward to hearing testimonies from that group in the future.

Something is happening...

I was a bit caught off guard when I walked onto the boardwalk tonight and noticed Stephen sitting on the bench. He's been away from the beach for several months now, staying at the SDRM. Unfortunately something had happened, and he was in no shape to talk, much less I spend time trying to understand what few words he could get out. It broke both my heart and the heart of dear my wife. I'm sure we'll make a trip down this weekend to get some clarity with him, once he sobers up.

We had a large gathering of hungry folk waiting for us. The few good men that I knew I could rely on helped unload and set up. I'm forever grateful to have the help with such things... it just expedites the starting time.

I shared a message, and by faith arranged to have Bibles on site. We were blessed with a small army of help tonight, including our good friend, Mary Clo. I'll get to how awesome that is shortly...

After I'd shared and prayed over the meal, I was introduced to a gentleman who'd been passing by and inquired about what we're doing. He offered to assist in building a resume for those that might be interested in getting off their feet and into the workforce again. A few short moments later, I was interrupted by commotion in the crowd.

A woman who'd come for dinner, one that I'd never seen before, had fallen down and slightly split her head open. She's diabetic and passed out due to her blood sugar level. At first she was unresponsive! Mary Clo just so happens to be a nurse! She came to the aid and helped assess the situation. Not only is Mary Clo a nurse, she's also one of the biggest prayer warriors I know.

My friend Adam and I rushed over and started praying over the woman who'd fallen. We learned her name is Tracy. While Mary Clo is praying over this lady, Adam and I are praying that whatever happens... Jesus would be glorified in all of this. Completely surrounded by everyone, Mary Clo used the powerful name of Jesus Christ and commanded Tracy to open her eyes... at that very moment, her eyes opened wide! Everyone witnessed it, and were astonished at what they just saw! Tracy was now awake, and the paramedics were called, arriving shortly after. They took Tracy away in the ambulance.

The food went faster than I would have ever imagined it would, but there was nothing we could do about it. Everyone ate, some had seconds, some didn't. Although the food was gone, a vast majority of the people remained to stick around. I soak up every opportunity I can when that happens.... with so many eager students with us now from HSE, there is hardly a moment where one isn't already spending one-on-one with somebody. As I glanced up and down the boardwalk, it was pure beauty to my eyes! There were 6 or 7 separate ministries going on! It was exactly how I had imagined it to be from the beginning.

My friend Ray and I had the opportunity to speak with a gentleman named Press. I asked if we could pray for him. He'd mentioned some health problems that he's currently dealing with. In the middle of praying for his health, I heard GOD speak to me. He literally stopped me in mid-prayer. All of a sudden, I asked Press if he was ready to be forgiven of his sins and washed new. He wanted to be forgiven and wanted Jesus to come into his life. We then prayed with him to accept Jesus Christ. It was a trip for both Ray and I to experience that, right then. I encouraged Press to get rooted into a Bible-believing church. He said he'd check out Horizon and I promised to keep an eye out for him.

Our brother, Lamarr spent most of his time speaking with a man named Resty. I didn't catch much of their conversation, but by the time I had come over, Resty was asking where our church was located because he'd like to check it out too. Lamarr is another prayer warrior, and somebody I know I can always count on. I thank GOD for answering my prayers and giving us such awesome people to share this Ministry with.

I encountered 4 people who wanted & received new Bibles tonight. I would agree that the Bibles we have access to are of smaller print, which isn't always the easiest to read... I met a man named Dennis today. He respectfully turned down one of our Bibles because of the print, and size. For many of these guys, a large zip-lock bag is what holds all of their possessions. Another HSE student, James, kindly and very humbly offered his own personal pocket Bible to Dennis because it was much more suitable to his needs. I was moved and honored to see such a deed. I pray that GOD blesses James for that.

In closing... I'd wrap everything up by saying it was just a crazy night. So much went on and I'd hate to bore any readers. My plan is to have others join in with their input from their own perspectives. I feel it would be much more interesting.

Answered prayers! (April 9, 2010)

Amanda and I were away this week. It had been planned long ago, and to be honest we were worried what would happen while we were gone. Would we find anybody to help out? Would we find anyone to cook the meal? Would we this or would we that..... so we prayed and prayed and prayed some more.

How silly we are to sometime forget who our Father is! GOD is always faithful, and I believe that as long as we're in His will, He'll take care of the small things.

All of the necessary food was taken care of... and then some! The food was purchased, then cooked by volunteers, picked up by other volunteers, and served. It also just so happens that my friend, Rob has a truck, so he was also able to pick up and transport the tables and cooler that wouldn't fit in a car. I can't help but give a heart felt thank you to all of those who helped out this week in our absence. It means so much to Amanda and I. For me, it's a reminder of what a family is supposed to be like and for that, I'm very grateful.

From what I've been told...
Joey shared from 1 Corinthians 15 to a group in the upper range of 80 hungry people.
There was just the right amount of food and nobody went away unfed.
There was some one-on-one interaction going on, witnessing with the men in love.
I'm unaware of all the people who came to serve, but I trust that GOD strategically placed them at the right place at the right time for the right person.

My encouragement is to trust GOD. As long as we're obedient and keep our focus on Him, there's nothing to worry about because our Creator gently handles His Creation, like a Potter with his clay.

GOD is good all the time, and all the time GOD is good!

One of their own.... (Friday)

We celebrated Good Friday yesterday. It was no ordinary day for us, not only were we celebrating the sacrifice our Lord endured for us, but it was also a milestone for our Ministry. As we rolled into the month of April... it was last April that Amanda and I had first started coming down to PB.

There was a lot of emotion this week. Whether or not it's good or bad, is completely up to one's own personal perspective I guess.

Our friend Jeremy, whom you might recall has been sober and living at the SDRM for the past 5 months, has now been able to get 8hr passes during the weekends. He'd decided to ride his bicycle the 20+ mile (round trip) down to hang out and share about how he's living now.

I had a feeling that the guys would be impacted by the transformation they see in him. Keep in mind, most of them had seen Jeremy in his worst condition and had thought he'd passed away.

Joey shared a powerful message about why Good Friday is so important, and how powerful Jesus Christ is, which then lead to Jeremy speaking to the crowd. (As expected, nobody recognized him: clean shaven, sober, healthy, talking about GOD) The crowd constantly rotates, so only a few people remembered who Jeremy was, but when he gave his testimony, it definitely ministered to the men because he was once one of their own. They could relate better to what he was saying, more than I could ever do.

Our team was blessed abundantly with help and dinner contributions. It is so nice having more of The Body coming to our side. It has completely freed me up to sit and speak with those in need of prayers. I was able to talk to Keith, and learn what GOD has been doing in his life. Keith now works 3 jobs, 7 days a week, and has been given the opportunity to move onto his employers boat, as a rent to own. I was surprised and encouraged to hear Keith give credit to the things I've shared over time. He let me know that he appreciates everything I've ever told him and that he's really been inspired and has held onto hope in GOD. He's now starting to understand how GOD desires obedience and honors those that follow through.

One of the men, "Vista" came for dinner. He was in horrible shape. His face was bloated and as red as a tomato. He remembered Jeremy very well, as they used to be drinking buddies, I'm told. Vista started crying and asked for prayer. He said he was ready to quit drinking. He started suffering from withdrawls right in front of us.... assuming he was near to having a seizure, I called the paramedics. They ended up taking him to the hospital, where he'll be treated with medication to help ease his suffering, only to be released back to the streets. Vista knows the 'street life' will kill him. He admitted that he drinks three 5's of Vodka each day. I'm currently trying to get him into treatment through the SDRM and VOA. Please pray that doors would be opened for Vista. He's 32y/o and has a daughter he'd love to have a relationship with again.

After most of the crowd had left, I wanted to honor our Lord Jesus, by breaking bread with my Brothers & Sisters, in remembrance of what was laid down for us. I personally felt like it was meaningful and went well. (I'm always observing!) As we were all standing there holding our bread and cups, the very moment before we partook, I glanced up at the boardwalk and noticed a rather large group of passer-byers staring back puzzled. That very moment, I wondered how often it is that people would see a group of Believers sharing in communion on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach.

I'd like to end this entry with encouraging words for everyone, whether you believe in GOD or not.... 'GOD the Father' is a true GOD, a GOD who is Faithful, a GOD who does answer prayers...
Give Him a chance to reveal Himself to you, and be blessed today.

A solid and sad truth ~ Friday

Please allow me to start by reminding everyone that we (Most people) are truly blessed beyond what we can ever imagine!

We have our health and if we're sick or have a cough, we can conveniently go to the local store, get some cough drops or make an appointment to see our physician. Chances are if you're reading this, you have the luxury of electricity and are in the confines of 4 walls with a roof over your head and most likely a warm room with a bed to sleep in during the cold nights.

This is not written as a guilt trip of any sort... this is to simply remind all of us to be thankful for the things we do have. Most, if not all, of the men and women that we meet with on a weekly basis do not share the same luxuries that I just mentioned. I'm sure you already knew that though. I make mention of the health issue, because my heart is burdened with grief with what I've experienced within the last week or so.

When we first started this Ministry, Amanda and I had our fair share of "homeless people" that we knew, but it was just in passing or because we usually saw them in front of the local gas station. My heart has grown to love all of these people... as hard as that may be at times and I genuinely care for each of them that let me get close enough to know them. What I'm sharing is that some of these people have grown on me and I personally know them in one way or another. Whether it be in PB on Friday, or driving down the street anywhere else, I now see somebody in need completely different than I did before.

An astonishing and heartbreaking number that most would consider a "lucky" number- 7... A total of 7 people, whom all were "without shelter", whom I've personally known (one way or another) have passed away within the last week. Of those 7, my Friend & Brother in Christ, Kenneth, who I had the privilege to meet through this Ministry, has went to the mansion that our Heavenly Father has prepared for him. May his warm, gentle smile forever be remembered.
Some of these 7 passed while sleeping in the cold, some from drug overdoses, and some from neglecting their health. The entire point of all this, is to encourage others to pray. Next time you're at a stop light in your car, or walking into Starbucks and see somebody in need... you don't need to give them anything.... but you can always lift them up in prayer. Tomorrow is promised to no one! I'm learning that this Ministry is only getting harder as I meet more people. It's tugging at my heart because I'm aware of the health issues they have, the addictions they struggle with and where they call home.

Now that I've shared what's on my heart, I'll get onto sharing about the evening...

It's always so encouraging to be greeted upon arrival from others waiting to serve and carry items down for us. My friend Rob, from home fellowhip, was able to join us for the night. Lamarr made the journey down on his bicycle to help Minister to everyone. Dana and Ruben blessed us with their giant salads and helping hands. We had a good number of volunteers to help distribute the clothing because the crowd is growing again.

I started the evening by sharing the scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:9.

About 30mins into the night, I noticed some of our team just hanging out and Ministering love to individuals all around us. It was beautiful! I was asked to pray for a man named Larry (a regular) by his friend Jane (another regular). Larry was rushed to the hospital due to Liver failure early Friday afternoon. Booze is his weakness. Please keep his health and salvation in your prayers.

To my knowledge, only 1 person was unable to eat because the food had run out by the time he'd arrived. We ended fairly early even with a larger group. Some of our team decided to go hang out afterwards. In all of the excitement, one of us had accidentally forgotten something down there. It wasn't until about 15mins later that we realized this, so we turned around. I would like to think that the power of GOD has impacted the lives of the individuals in PB, because in the past... this item would have be lonnnnnnggggg gone, but of course it was still sitting in the same place, untouched, undisturbed. That in itself is a true miracle!

Longer days equals longer lines.

It's so nice to have the wonderful sunlight again! As the winter comes to an end, so does the shelter & help from the city, for the needy. Which brings them back to the streets in search of places to eat. Just from the last few weeks, we've seen the attendance grow in the upper 2 digit numbers again. Due to the lengthy line, and people arriving later, there were about 3-5 people who missed out on a meal tonight. It's really sad to look them in their eyes and have to tell them we have nothing left, before they walk away.

Tonight's message was about facing the cold reality of "Death". This week was a struggle for me to find the proper message to share... and to be honest, it wasn't until this very morning, that I was inspired by my own Pastors daily devotions, that GOD revealed what was to be said. I certainly couldn't have planned that, and it was perfect because it was all part of GOD's perfect plan. Today was such a beautiful day in sunny San Diego! The beach itself was packed with many people enjoying the weather -tanning, playing football, reading books... all on the sand. As I started to share the message, I glanced out to the beach and noticed a large portion of people were listening to what was being said. I feel it was at that very moment, that GOD gave me a very small glimpse of what He had planned.

We were blessed again with so many of the HSE students, to help minister where it's needed. While Jason played an amazing set of worship songs, Will and I went to speak with a regular guest, "Ron". He was very depressed and we offered prayer. He declined because he's agnostic. Just a few minutes into our conversation, I was baffled to learn that he was once a Reverend. (I can not comprehend how one could go from one to the other!) His piercing blue eyes screamed out years of pain and suffering of some kind, as tears slowly trickled down his cheeks. It's hard for me to know what to do in this situation... most people are more than happy to have others pray for them, but not Ron. He doesn't want anything to do with Jesus. (Please stop reading right now, and take a moment to pray for this man.)

As we went back to the lower level to be with the group, we were greeted with smiles from everyone. All seemed very well. There were tons of clothes being given out. It's a great honor for me to see how this Ministry has grown over the last year.

Starting from Amanda and I bringing a single tray of Spaghetti and meeting with a group no larger than 7 or 8 people; growing to 4 trays of pasta, fruits, salads, desserts, clothes, hygiene kits, socks, Bibles, worship music, dozens of people coming to know Christ, men overcoming their addictions, a full team of support, and ministering to a group the size of a few Platoons. I am sooooooooo thankful that GOD is moving in this Ministry!

Many of our friends from HSE got the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with people and pray with them. I wish I had the time to sit down with all of them and get their perspectives to share with all who read this blog. Perhaps some of them will write and share...

One of our regulars, Michael (who'd recently accepted Jesus) had a handful of prayer requests and I had the privilage to pray with him. Simply by his requests, I could tell that fruit is starting to blossom. His prayers were not of selfish motives, on the other hand, they were for others. One person I'd like to share about is a man named Mr. Groff. He's currently a patient at the VA hospital and spends his days laying face down on a gurney, alone with no visitors. Michael asked if we could pray for this mans comfort! I did my best to let Micahel know that he doesn't need a mediator to Jesus, he has full access to our Lord just a well as any of us do, and encouraged him to pray for Mr. Groff anytime he thought of him.

Amanda's co-worker, James, was able to sit with a gentleman for some one-on-one talk. I didn't really get a chance to hear what all of the conversations were throughout the night, but it's neat to sit back and watch the love of GOD work through people. For many, all they desire is to be accepted and talked to like civil human beings again. If nothing else, we can at least do that..... but I'm happy to announce that GOD is doing far more than that through his faithful ones who are willing to step out in faith.

The lessons HE teaches... (March 12th)

Friday night went well... We were blessed again to have some of the students from HSE come down, lead worship and minister to our friends. We were also joined by some of our friends from our home fellowship and a friend of mine from work. Dana and Reuben blessed us again with a huge salad, apples and most importantly their presence and willingness to help out.

Beau spoke a message of building strong foundations in our lives. He gave an invitation and 4 men came to know Jesus. Please pray for these men that the seeds that have fallen do not get snatched up.

There were many opportunities to pray for our friends down at the beach and we took full advantage of it. I came across a lady, we'll call her A for privacy reasons, that I had been ministering to for some time. Just recently, maybe 3 months ago, she let me inside her life a little bit and told me a heart breaking story of how she came to be on the streets. I felt like I had made a little break through with her because she had always been very guarded with us. Beau and I had come down on a few Saturday mornings to spend some one on one time with her and to try to get to know her better. Then one week she was gone and she had not been around for the last 3-4 weeks. I was worried about her, hoping that she was OK as she had been telling me of some harassment she had been victim to. Every week I would ask around to see if any of the guys knew where she was. No one could really say much other than "she's around". As we were winding down for the night I looked up and saw her walking on the board walk. I was so happy to see her. I was able to spend some time catching up with her. She told me that she has found a place to stay. In turn for cooking, grocery shopping and running errands she has been allowed to stay in a near by apartment. It was a blessing to see her and a reminder of the love that GOD has placed in my heart for the people down there. I mention her and a little about her story as a reminder to pray for these people, collectively and individually. It is not far fetched for their lives to be taken by an act of violence or a drug or alcohol over dose. They are dying, physically and more importantly spiritually. They desperately need the Lord...

As we approach our year mark of the ministry I can't help but look back at all of the things that the Lord as taught me... In so many ways HE has shown me what true love is. HE has shown me that true love does not judge; that it is gentle and patient; that it can be given without any reciprocation and that it is not self serving. HE has shown me that love is a choice and requires sacrifice. I know that this ministry is not for everyone. It is a difficult ministry and often times discouraging. In fact, I would have thought that this type of ministry was not for me but GOD has this amazing way of teaching me that HIS ministry.... is simply to love.

Thank you all for reading, for your prayers and support. We love you and thank GOD for you continually.
